POP-UP SHOW

building the Store Front

The night before

We hadn’t finished building our store until the very last second. We were behind schedule so we decided to camp out in the store and wake up early to finish the awning. But it was raining and we didn’t have a ceiling so we threw a tarp over the store. After finishing some store signs, we set up a projector, ordered some Pizza Hut, and watched “The Re Mix” documentary on Netflix.

THE EVENT

CSP DESCRIPTION

Collaborative study project by Beyonce Armstrong (Kast Kids) and Dorian Epps (O.G Sportswear) to produce works involving fashion and art toys.

RISD does not provide courses in our curriculum that allow us to intermingle and collaborate the most effectively with other departments. Especially as a result of COVID, it seems as though collaborative efforts outside of our departments have dwindled. As a designer it is essential to embark on a project that introduces our artistic practices in real world instances while utilizing aspects from different art forms to enhance our knowledge of fashion, form and function.

Though our designs may be rooted in the past, our objectives and goals address and attempt to create discussions surrounding the present and future. We also intend to recognize the current events, climate, and environment we live in. It is important that we find positive ways to influence the direction in which we as designers can go.

For our CSP we will create separate bodies of work to focus on achieving a collective goal: showing the impact of Black culture in pop culture and how we can use that to propel our designs in a direction that has not been done yet. We will be curating a fashion show and a pop-up show to display the works we have created and also share the process of how they came to fruition.

Beyonce's Personal Gain: It is important to be introduced to practices of mass production and capitalism. While RISD teaches the many technical and conceptual realities of art making, I would like to delve into the business sector of the art world and how to create products suitable for consumerist markets. Many of my art influences from pop art to street fashion has dealt with aspects of pop culture and how it relates to monetizing art practices. Creating business proposals and collaborating with another artist will introduce an interdisciplinary experience that will prepare me for future business practices.
